Colon Cancer Awareness & Screening
Signs & Symptoms Of Colon Cancer
Colon cancer can be difficult to detect early because many of its symptoms overlap with other gastrointestinal conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), diverticulitis, or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
Possible signs and symptoms may include:
-
Changes in bowel habits, including diarrhea or constipation
-
A feeling that the bowel does not empty completely
-
Blood in the stool
-
Persistent abdominal discomfort lasting several weeks
-
Rectal bleeding
-
Unexplained weight loss
-
Weakness or fatigue
If symptoms persist or worsen, medical evaluation is recommended.
How Colon Cancer Is Detected
Screening plays a critical role in identifying colon cancer early. Several testing methods may be used depending on a patient’s health history and risk factors.
Common screening options include:
-
Colonoscopy (the most effective screening method)
-
CT colonography
-
Flexible sigmoidoscopy
-
Stool DNA testing
-
Guaiac-based fecal occult blood test
-
Double-contrast barium enema
A colonoscopy is considered the gold standard because it allows physicians to detect and remove polyps during the same procedure, preventing them from becoming cancerous. Patients should speak with a physician to determine which screening option is most appropriate for their individual needs.
Colon Cancer Treatment Options
Treatment depends on the stage of the cancer and the patient’s overall health. Treatment strategies may include surgery, chemotherapy, or a combination of approaches.
Surgery
If colon cancer is detected early and confined to a polyp, it may be removed during a colonoscopy. Larger polyps may require endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR).
If cancer has spread to surrounding portions of the colon, surgeons may remove the affected section and reconnect the healthy ends of the intestine. In some cases, a temporary or permanent colostomy may be required.
For advanced cancers causing obstruction, surgery may also be used to relieve symptoms such as bleeding or blockage.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy may be used to:
-
Shrink tumors prior to surgery
-
Treat cancer that has spread to lymph nodes
-
Manage symptoms in advanced stages of disease
Treatment plans are carefully tailored to each patient’s specific condition and overall health.
